Principal's Report

End of Term

This Friday 16th September is the last day of term 3. Dismissal time for the last day of term is 2.30pm. As we reflect back on Term 3, there have been many extra curricula activities to further enhance our students learning including:
  • 3/4 Scienceworks Excursion
  • Phillip Island Camp
  • Prep Minibeast Incursion
  • Book Week Dress Up Day
  • 100 Days of Prep
  • Cyber Safety Day

Hats

Students are required to wear a SunSmart (broadbrimmed or legionnaires) for Term 4 and Term 1, 2023 when outside for play, PE or class activities. Students without hats will be asked to play or sit in shaded areas. Caps and visors are not suitable alternatives for SunSmart protection.

Parent Opinion Survey

A reminder that if you were invited through email to participate in the Parent Opinion Survey for the school, to please complete this by tomorrow to provide important feedback to the school. As of today, only 10% of the 75 families invited have completed the survey. For the school to get a get a good sample of parent feedback and perception we would like to reach at least a 75% response rate. If you are having difficulties accessing this survey online, please contact the school for help.

Acting Assistant Principal News

Welcome Mrs Szeremeta

   Rebecca Szeremeta

It’s been very exciting being part of the Epping PS community. In my 4 weeks here so far, I have been lucky to meet many of you and your wonderful children, mainly through them asking me “How do I say your name again?” I get it! It’s tricky! I’d like to thankyou for your warm welcome to the school.  I look forward to meeting everyone so if I haven’t met you yet, please come over and say hello!

I have been working in Victorian Government primary schools for over 20 years, most of those years spent at Thomastown East Primary School and last year at Thomastown West Primary School as the Acting Assistant Principal. I have taught across all year levels and have been a Curriculum Leader for the last 6 years.

I have three boys, 12 year old twins that are identical and a 14 year old.  Like lots of you, I spend the weekend running around after my sports crazy children and you’ll find me at a basketball stadium or football oval! I am very much looking forward to the warmer weather as one of my favourite things to do is taking my cheeky cavoodle (Murphy) for a walk.

Once again, thank you to everyone for making me feel very welcome. I look forward to supporting the school community to develop the extraordinary Epping Primary School students to become the best they can be.

With school holidays around the corner, there are many things you can do at home to help build and sustain your child’s wellbeing.

Praise, encouragement and positive attention

Praise helps your child feel good about themselves which boosts self-esteem and confidence. It can also encourage good behaviour. You can:

  • give your child praise when they behave in ways that you want to encourage
  • give your child attention. For example, play a game with them, do an activity together or ask about their interests
  • remind your child of their strengths
  • let your child know you are proud of them

Positive self-talk

Encouraging your child to talk to themselves in a kind and positive way can help improve their wellbeing and help them manage stress.  When you hear them speaking about themselves that is not kind, you can:

  • bring it to their attention
  • ask them if what they are saying is true
  • encourage your child to speak to themselves the way they’d speak to a friend
  • model positive self-talk in front of your child

Maintain good relationships

A positive relationship with your child is critical to supporting wellbeing.  To encourage this you can:

  • share family memories and stories together
  • try to eat a meal together each night
  • establish and maintain family rituals and routines
  • assist with social connections. For example, helping to coordinate a play date.

Education News

Phillip Island Camp

Last week 62 children and 8 staff attended the Phillip Island adventure resort. We were lucky to have great weather for all three days.

Some of the activities the children did were Giant Swing, Twin Flying Fox, Archery and Disc Golf.

We also went to Smiths beach for an afternoon. Here there was some rockpool rambling, beach cricket and sand castle building.

The night activities included a disco and a visit to the Penguin Parade where we saw hundreds of Penguins.

All the children had a great time! We all arrived home exhausted!

Rainbow Room Monitors

The Rainbow Room Monitors volunteer their time to help out with the Rainbow Room program. This can be by organising resources, helping to keep track of the attendance list, mentoring other students who sign up by role modelling how to be a good friend and playing games such as Jenga and other games that require taking turns and waiting patients. Sensory activities with sand, watercolour paints, glue and scissors are often in rotation which our monitors also have meetings to discuss which activities would be fun and help improve fine motor skills.

5/6 Night of the Notables

This week our 5/6 students showcased their amazing knowledge and displays of their chosen notable Australian. It was great to see so many dressed as their chosen person and their displays showed all the hard work during the term.
Thank you to all the parents who came along to make the evening special and celebrate their great effort.
